Each Open so far this season has thrown up some outstanding achievements from players from our League. This time it was the turn of the Sussex Open...............
1. Kevin Hall for managing his first competitive break of 20,000: What a time to do it ! Facing the Number One player in the world, Kevin Tunstall - his mentor - Kev 'the Reaper' turned tor-mentor as he managed to overcome a 19,000 deficit from the first leg to achieve victory amid much applause. This earns young Kev the much-coveted "Sussex 20-k Club" t-shirt. Wear it with pride, young fellow, you deserve it !
2. Henry Brooks for confirming his promise and proving what a great player he is by making it to the Quarter-finals out of an original line-up of 108 players. Many had tipped Worthing's Dave France to do well in this competition, but the H it Man swept him aside to make the Last Eight, before putting up a gutsy performance against world number 3 Steven Sheard. it was not to be, though, as Steven matched H's opening break of 7k and with his break game to come put the tie beyond reach. Henry received a cheque for £20 as well as a smart trophy for his achievement.

Indeed, many congratulations to The 'H'itman for reaching the quarter-finals yesterday....... also to Mr Reaper who joined the Sussex 20k Club in style with a memorable performance to knock out SirKT. :o ;D ;D ;D
It was great to see Mid-Sussex so well represented at Roffey and there were a number of other notable victories with Peter Edwards knocking out Oxon Open winner Tony Martin in the first round and (late reserve) Darrell Skinner reaching the last 32...... 8-)
Possibly one of the most keenly contested matches of the day was the "Battle of the Tommos"...... which saw Margo take the honours by knocking Surrey Open Semi-Finalist Clive out in the first round. :o :o

Well done Henry on your first open quarter final - brilliant!
And Kev on your first 20k, great effort, and to do it chasing 19k against KT makes it even more special. Welcome to the 20k club, Steve Mariner will have to order another T-Shirt. And you make sure that Dave France won't hang on to that 20k trophy for long!

The turn once again of Dave Ingram, who performed the heroics at the Bucks Open 2009 by winning the 'Plate' - a fine 7k break in the second leg of the Final being sufficient to see off Oxford's Geoff Mace.
Dave had the toughest of tasks in the form of World No.5 Keith Sheard - a hurdle which he couldn't overcome - but after that his display was faultless, as he defeated in turn Lorraine Hall, Vinnie Mitchell, Pauline Withey, Simon Ellam and finally Geoff Mace.
For this fine effort, Dave received a cheque, plus a superb trophy of a pair of brandy goblets on an engraved plinth.

Mid Sussex sent their usual quota of competitors to Jersey last week for the World Championships. And pick of the players was Kevin Hall, who made it as far as his sheet final (last 32) where he was duly dispatched by eventual winner Phil Collins.
Darrell Skinner, Bob Hall and Nikki Hinkins all survived into the Sunday (last 64) before falling to Chris Newson (Hants), Kenneth Malorey (Jersey) and Tony Hearne (Bucks) respectively.
Ros Appleby made it as far as the Last 16 in the Plate, winning three good games along the way, versus Gina Sherrat, Colin Southhouse and Martin Smith before losing to eventual Plate Winner Bernie McCluskey.

Adam played well all day to win his group, then beat Lewis Stratford in the semi-finals before losing to the "in-form" defending champion, Steven Sheard, in the Final. ;)
Well played Adam..... also Nikki Hinkins who also played as a late reserve and did well to win her final group game. ;D ;D

It was the big fella Dave Ingram again, with an excellent performance at Reading in the Grand Prix, the annual competition for the sixteen most consistent performers in national 'Opens'.
Dave was a whisker away from qualifying for the Semi-Final, having beaten both three-times World Champ Jim Millward, and 'mighty Reaper' Kev Hall with 10k-plus scores, only to lose out on aggregate to this year's World Finalist Paul Sainsbury.
Your correspondent was also a (surprise) first-time qualifier and was grouped with Pete Sainsbury, World No.2 Nigel Senior and eventual winner Curt Driver - and proved unequal to the task !
Lorraine Hall, Jenny Edwards, Hayley Tunstall and Colleen Park all flew the flag in the Ladies' equivalent, and had their moments, but it was Chris Toner from Hampshire who came through the winner, beating Jean Brackenridge in the Final.

Thanks Tommo...... ;D Hmmmm, not sure though about being "a whisker away from qualifying for the Semi-Final"...... unless there are some very large whiskers in your part of the world!! :o Paul won all 3 of his games, including giving me the heaviest defeat I have ever had in a match (a 20k table play out on his break, followed by another 15k in the next game after I had left a one up short on 2.5k in my break! :-[) in my game against him. No complaints about that from me, he played superbly and the table was very good..... 8-) But, I still had a great day and it was brilliant just to qualify to play in the Grand Prix..... and see so many other Mid-Sussex players there amongst the "elite"! ;D ;D ;D

Yes, barbilliards at this level is cut-throat, and only those of stern disposition should put themselves through it ..... playing Nigel I whipped my third split onto the peg, and with his break to come I was 30 thousand down before my next visit ! :'( ;D But as you say it was enjoyable trying to compete in such illustrious company. And an interesting day all round with the Ladies GP and the 'old boys' going on at the same time! ;) ;) ;D

In the first Open on the 2010 circuit, the Oxfordshire, Dave Ingram made the quarter-finals, something that by now we have come to expect.
But the true Mid Sussex Hero this time is none other than our birthday boy Bob Hall, who reached the Last 16 in only his second competitive season.
Brother Kev and mum Lorraine both made the quarter-finals of the Plate.
Dave had a convincing Second Round win against England International Mark Brewster and followed it up by knocking out the holder, Oxford's Tony Martin, before losing narrowly in a high-scoring match to Hampshire's Barry Radford.
Young Boball gained the scalps of Sussex player Bill Kerr and Oxford's Pete Soanes - victor over another Sussex County player Dave France but was then defeated by Oxford's Ian Moss, thus denying himself a crack at the eventual winner Nigel Senior - who defeated World Champion Phil Collins in the Final.

Well done to Mid-Sussex A, who finished 2nd in the division in the InterLeague annual One-Dayer, but narrowly missed out on promotion: (1.Littlehampton 24pts, 2.Mid Sussex 22pts, 3.Billingshurst 18pts, 4.Eastbourne 17pts, 5.Lewes 14pts, 6.West Sussex 10pts)
Well done too to Henry Brooks for topping the averages on the day, winning all five of his games. Derek Taylor and Peter Edwards both won four out of five.

You forgot to mention yourself Clive :o ;D Ok Sandra........... tommo's early form promised much, but as usual he under-achieved: Well done to Chris Newson on a great comeback, and by going on to a first-ever "Last 8" appearance. ;) Whilst we're at it, the BB Warrior also made it to the last 32 stage, and along the way recorded a personal best highest competitive break of 16,340.

Mid Sussex were well represented in the 2nd Surrey Open at Merstham yesterday, but pick of the bunch once again was the Chunky Monkey (Plate Finalist): Plate Last eight stage........... Kevin Hall bt Ian Moss Semi-finals......... Kevin Hall bt Bill Kerr Final........Martin Smith bt Kevin Hall ................and Hurst A teammate Lady H made it as far at the last 16, beating Chris Bateman and Darrell Skinner before falling to semi-finalist Mark Trafford. Husband Kevin Tunstall won the event to add to his Guernsey triumph the week before. Hayley Tunstall received the award for furthest lady.

Adam Bateup is Mid Sussex's latest hero with a suberb showing in the 17th Sussex Open yesterday held at Roffey Sports and Social Club.
Following the benefit of a first round Bye, in the second round he overcame Oxford's Lewis Stratford, recording 20k over the two legs including a personal best break. In the Third Round he overcame Horsham's experienced Dick Dewdney - which launched him into the Last Sixteen. Here he had a huge battle with Portsmouth's Tony Webster (rated no.32 in the British rankings) but sadly missed out by just a few hundred points after catching a one-up too thin when approaching the winning line.
But at least Adam now knows that a quarter-final place in an Open is not beyond his capabilities. Girlfriend Nikki Hinkins had a good run in the Plate, also making it to the Last 16 after a First-round defeat by Colleen Park in the main competition.

23-year-old Bob Hall has matched brother Kev's achievement of two months ago in reaching the Final of the Plate in one of the National Open Competitions - the Kent Classic, which took place yesterday at the Six In One Club at Tonbridge. Bob beat strong Kent player Pete Phillips in the quarter-final and then Worthing's Bill Kerr in a tense semi-final - before finding England hopeful Mark Trafford just too strong in the Final. www.mid-sussexbbl.co.uk/page4.htmlHurst A teammate Hayley Tunstall was amongst the honours once more, taking the Ladies Highest Break award with a super 5k. Husband Kev won the main event tot add to his Guernsey and Surrey triumphs, making it three Open Championships out of the last four staged.

A selection this time so take your pick !
Kevin Hall made the last 16 of the Bucks Open, and it took eventual winner and current world champion Phil Collins to knock him out.
And we had three in the last eight of the Plate: Hayley Tunstall beating Sandra Race but going on to lose in the semi-final to eventual winner Dave Ingram, who landed his 26th trophy of the season.

a few selections to choose from both bobhall and cmoh reaching the last 16 bobhall overcoming lady H in the 1st to then defeat Dave Ingram in a close game before having Phil Collins just two much. Sandra was fortunate to have a bye in the first before defeating Pauline withey, but unfortunately Nigel senior the eventual winner being too much.
but i suppose the true hero would be chunky monkey reaching and winning the plate final first losing to Pauline before reaching the final and winning a close game well played mate i suppose he also probably won the drinking as well
