Whilst I agree with Nigel that there were others with a strong claim, her achievement actually surpassed her mother's 30-odd years ago, as Zara's was a World title.
The other worthy candidates I suppose were Darren Clarke, Andrew Murray, and - you have to hand it to him - David Walliams.

The other worthy candidates I suppose were Darren Clarke, Andrew Murray, and - you have to hand it to him - David Walliams. Agree she has better credentials than her mother, who also won it. So maybe the second worst choice ever. Whilst there were no candidates from the main sports, football, cricket and rugby, there were other far more worthy candidates than Zara, whose World title was hardly covered by the press, and the sport she participates in is not one that holds the interests of the masses. Joe Calzaghe acheviments were probably the greatest this year, although he has probably never caught the public's imagination, and I do feel he still need a big American fight in America to gain a bit more respect. Lets face he is not got the public profile that Benn and Eubank had, and they never won Sports personality - but Joe should have easily made the top 3. Phil Taylor treatment by the Beeb is absolutley shocking, but at least they invited him this year. A 2 minute chat was all he got. He is a 13 time world champion for christs sake, what other British sportsman can boast that? However, it was Darren Clarke's story that made the year. He was inspirational to the whole Europe team, and actually an inspiration to the Americans as well. He was unbeaten over the weekend, including beating Tiger Woods and he did it home soil. No he may never have won a major, but the Ryder Cup was all about him this year, and it was a very uplifting and moving occasion to watch on television. It may be voted for by the public, but the Beeb always champion the candidates in sports they televise on the night, hence Zara getting all the airtime, and Beth Tweddle (who somehow finished third), Joe Calzaghe was dragged on 2 minutes before the end, even though votes were being cast from the beginning of the show. I think it said it all when Zara kept saying amazing in her non prepared speech, what a personality!

Fully agree Nige.
Few but those born with a silver spoon in their mouth could afford such an elitist sport.
I was gobsmaked when she won it. I thought the award was for personailty??
Amazing ;D

Hmmm........anyhoo......I agree with Nige that David Walliams should definitely have won it and take the hint that Zara should get Ee-Aw points along with Q for his new avatar and Nenecupper and Gaylord Damo for their achievements last night and not forgetting Charlie Peelmeister who had to withstand 4 hours of constant barracking and Jase for an Ee-Aw shot at 6.5k and Grandad Chambers for showing off :P

Lady H has provided the following offering from Tunstall Palace : www.golakes.co.uk/xmasbaarmysheep/Now I know that sheep are a bit 'old hat' and we're on to a different set of euphemisms, but it's seasonal and well worth the investigation. so thank you Hayley, and can she have some Eew-aw points please ? Oh..............and the sheep are from the Loake District. ;D

Found this little gem on the web, encompassing our furry friends and football.. with a little work we could even bring Everton into this. ABRAMOVITCH'S DONKEY SANCTUARY
Most of the time you'll find these places quietly tucked away Run by a bunch of crusties or the RSPCA But when you see the latest one I'm sure you will agree That every creature in it has a Premier pedigree....... It's funded by the billions leeched by private profiteers From Soviet oil resources built up over the years So take a walk to Stamford Bridge and soon you'll plainly see The universe's most exclusive donkey sanctuary!
CHORUS:
Donkey sanctuary, donkey sanctuary Hey Mr Abramovitch, will you buy one from me? Donkey sanctuary, donkey sanctuary They're overpriced, they're over here, they're playing for Chelsea!
He wants a new one every day so he puts in a bid And each new one costs double the amount the last one did That's twenty times more than they would have cost a week ago The Price is Right for Roman however high you go And all the while most of our clubs are fighting to survive With buckets and collections just to help them stay alive Some call this 'market forces' but we call it right wing shit In football, and in life, we've had far too much of it!
Chorus
So hate Man U for ever - but hate Chelsea even more Phone up Stanford Bridge and ask 'What's Russian for Ee-aw?' Rejoice each time they lose a game, abuse them when they win Cos they're a plastic football club, a profiteer's plaything That money is the people's cash - in Russia it should stay A curse upon the traitors who gave Soviet wealth away A few clubs get the millions, the rest go to the wall So let's kick out the usurers - and let's take back the ball!
Chorus www.attilathestockbroker.com/footpoem.html

Hmm, well spotted, H/V/P.
And you have a point - if Nigel is "Senior Staff", then Graham should be "Sparky Staff". ;D ;D Not sure that I like the new titles, they sound a bit poncey to me.
I suppose we ought to congratulate Sav, Sparky and Nigel on their promotions, though. And they're still Tarts to us. ;)

You could be right Tommo, maybe time for a new avatar but that one would have to be adjusted surely as the width & height are too big, or are you the master of avatars too :D ;D

KP's still the expert, have a word with him, if he's still willing to provide the service, I'll forward the link to him so's he can resize it for you. If not, I'll have a go myself but it will be trial and error !
