I don't think its a case of players wanting to play again just so they can get their ranking points. But in these unprecedented times may be the AEBBA should take the bold step to say no opens or tournaments played this year will carry ranking points.
It should be down to individual counties to decide if they can hold their tournaments safely. I believe that for this year only AEBBA should announce all ranking tournaments are cancelled and any points already awarded will be null and void. Counties can of course still hold their own tournaments if they wish.
Individuals can make their own choice as to whether they play or not but we need to get playing our game at local level with leagues resuming and see how that goes before anyone can think of holding national tournaments.
Just my thoughts Dave

For the safety of everyone I think all opens should be cancelled until 2021. It’s just pure selfishness if people think otherwise I hate to say it, but I think you are right. There is no way 64 players plus supporters could abide by social distancing rules even before they've had a drink

I've been to a few pubs, not GK, and whether rightfully or wrongly they are allowing pool and bar billiards to be played, the conditions are. The table is on free play, you pay £5 for 45ish minutes on the table and it has to be the same players throughout, after your time is up, the balls and table are cleaned. Seems a stupid idea and pretty sure it isn't in the spirit of covid safe

Until the advice of customers remaining seated as much as possible is changed there is no way for a pub to follow goverment guidance and allow bar billiards to be played. I think when that restriction is lifted or changed is the time we need to have ideas in place but it may well be by then we are allowed to play anyway. In the mean time we should respect publicans and not put any pressure on them, just be happy you can visit for a drink and support them. I can't see how guidelines can be followed and the game played unless you are going to completely clean the table after each player has visited the table, this would include the cloth as it will pick up stuff from the balls rolling over it, players hands touching it to pick up balls or in my case to stand pegs up. Gloves are impractical.

Tommo I am not sticking up for GK but for once they have listened to their staff. tenants were given the option to open up if they wanted to, but were not put under any pressure to open yesterday. managed houses and restaurant type places owned by GK were asked their opinions and the overwhelming response was not to open until after the weekend. I've seen the stocks of PPE, sanitiser, shields, posters etc they have in stock and they are ready to open. I did have a few beers down the white horse in Sudbury yesterday, they are playing things strictly to rules, keeping people at least two metres apart wherever possible and this seems to be leading to other problems as people start to raise their voices to have a chat with a mate who is sitting on the same table or a different table. Under these strict conditions there is NO way you could play bar billiards while adhering to the rules

I really think it is unfair to put even a tiny bit of pressure on the landlords/ladies at the moment, they are the ones who will face being closed down, fined and possibly a trip to court if they are found breaking the rules or even worse they have an outbreak of this virus traced back to their pub. It's their necks on the line

Lol tommo, I've been in a lot GK pubs over the past few days and none of them resemble the model pub in the sun's article. As a lot of pubs don't have a big lobby outside the toilet area, the guide lines are a "back to school" approach where you actually have to remain seated and raise you hand to ask if you can visit the loo. Sorry but I just can't see it working and pubs will end up being closed down by local authorities for failing to comply. All of this needs to be ironed out before we even think about asking the question about putting a pound in the billiards table

Spoke to a GK BDM this morning, their guidelines to pub games. Darts OK but every player must use their own darts. NO card games NO pool or bar billiards. This will be reviewed in a couple of weeks at local levels

While 10 mins continous play may work in principle with 3 pin, it would surely only favour the players who can play the break shot fast. Also what happens when you fail to pot a ball or play a foul? Do you restart from the break or continue from where the balls finish? If you restart from the break, then a player who messes up and leaves a ball at the top can then just keep his break, then on his next shot play a foul to get the balls back, on the other hand if you just continue you could easily start setting yourself up for 200 and 400 shots. Although we all like to think our game is played in a sportsmanship way, there would be opportunities for players to use that option of play to there advantage. Still say we are best to wait, let the pubs sort themselves out without us putting pressure on them to restart playing.

I think the only way forward is to wait. We need to let the mad rush pass and give the pubs time to sort themselves out first, after all it will be the pubs who get closed down again if things go wrong. They are the ones who have got to keep records etc. There will be problems for them iron out and I'd think playing billiards, Pool etc is low on the priority list. Pubs will be as busy as they can be to start with, people playing billiards won't bring in extra custom until the fad of pubs has dropped off.

My understanding is when pubs finally open, the insides will also be open in a limited way. I also believe our great goverment want us to start gambling again and want fruit machines switched on, but punters must clean the machine before they play on it and again when they've lost all their money in them and finish. I am sure we can come up with a similar system for bar billiards, hand sanitizer by the table, no pub cues, if you wanna play you use your own cue, etc. The biggest challange for pubs in going to be the bottle neck in and around the toilets. When you get old, like me, when you've gotta go you have gotta go and I think the toilet arrangement is going to determine the capacity of the pub.

22 this soul/Motown legend was taken from us at the young age of 61 when he died of a heart attack in 2003, the track in question made it into the UK top 10 in the late 70s Luther Vandross seems to fit the profile, but I can't equate it to a song. Not the singer in question im afraid. May be you need to look up into the night sky for some inspiration and a clue to their surname

Nothing is impossible. As you say the slate table top is the most important and heaviest part. If you are paying a company to deliver and install, will you also be buying the table from them? Just do the obvious and make sure they are fully insured.
Most counties hold their own opens and hire in tables for the event, so their is plenty of experience from members of this board on how best to transport tables and advice will, I am sure be freely available.
You do have the advantage in that you will only be doing this once. As Sav has said make sure the floor is strong enough and put something under the table legs to spread the weight.

Hi and welcome to the board and world of bar billiards.
As far as a table goes, so much depends if you want to play 3 or 4 pin? That will really determine what size table is best. 3 pin tables are wider, you can play a form of 4 pin on them but it doesnt work in reverse, you can't play 3 pin on a narrow table. Alan Turner, a member on here is often found in his workshop refurbishing tables in between telling jokes There are some stupidly priced tables on fleabay at the moment so talk to Alan and you could well save yourself a few hundred pounds. That is of course if you are in the UK

Hi nigel, Can you add Phillip Oakley to the next one please. Also can we refur to him as Phillip as that's what he likes to be called now Taa Good choice, I m thinking of changing to Bovril to make myself more acceptable to a larger audience. I'm not a fan of bovril or marmite. Can't you just be " cream of mushroom soup"

Nigel, during these testing times I am sure the AEBBA funds could do with a boost. Have you thought of asking everyone to donate a pound to AEBBA? Just a thought and I wait to get shouted down, but every little helps
