Very surprised and flattered to have found that I have been included once again, but very disappointed at the MAJORITY indication of being unwilling or unable to travel to represent their country.

Congratulations to Chris on his comeback and good to see BBW and Traffs holding down their places.
Four worthy 'rookies' also get their chance......Henry, Jim, Gerry and Simon: you've earned it! 8-)

will this be the team to play guernsey in sussex this coming year kt? Based on the selection last year Champs, I believe that the England Team is usually chosen for both internationals and that the players marked (doubtful) refers to the away game in Jersey but they would still be eligible to play in the match at home to Guernsey in June. ;) I can understand the comment made by Sav.... Very surprised and flattered to have found that I have been included once again, but very disappointed at the MAJORITY indication of being unwilling or unable to travel to represent their country. Sav ....although I do think that it is perhaps somewhat unfair to criticise players for not travelling when it could be that they are unable to afford it! :-X Personally, I am very proud to have been selected to play for England again next year and will be going over to Jersey, however for me to be able to "justify the costs" of travelling to that match (flights, hotel etc), Colleen & I will only be staying in Bournemouth for one night rather than two which will at least cover the cost of flights to Jersey. ;D Having spoken to a couple of the "doubtful" players, the main reason that they may not be playing in Jersey seems to be the costs involved in travelling over to just play two single legs legs of Bar Billiards.... flights with British Airways were about £85 return when I looked the other day and I would assume that the hotel is probably going to cost about the same for 2 nights, although I don't know what the arrangements are for that yet.... so you are looking in the region of £170 before you even think about cost of food and drink while you are there. :o One interesting thing that both of the players said to me about this was that they would have been far more likely to travel and pay the cost if there had been more games to play than just the two single leg games. ::) They both made the point that when England play Guernsey, the format is for both Singles and Doubles so you know that you will play at least 6 legs.... and, of course, the matches against Guernsey are scheduled to coincide with either the Guernsey or the Sussex Open, so there are those competitions to play in as well. 8-) So, perhaps the AEBBA and Jersey should consider something like this in the future and maybe look to either change the format of the matches played in the international.... or make the fixture coincide with another event? I am sure that some of the Jersey players have perhaps not travelled to England due to the cost of just playing a couple of games in the past? :-/ Bearing in mind that a lot of the UK players travel to Jersey for the World Championships on the Thursday, the match could perhaps be played (at one of the pubs on the island?) on the Thursday evening and the reverse fixture could be scheduled maybe either to be played at the Bournemouth AEBBA Pairs weekend.... or perhaps at the same time as the new National Off-the-Spot Competition? Something like this could give more entries for either of those competitions as well.... ;D An alternative suggestion made to me by one of the "doubtful" players was that the international matches could be played on a Triangular basis with each country taking it in turns to host the event once every 3 years, the formats could either stay as they are for each of these matches if that is what the international teams all want but it would mean less travelling overall for all of the players and would give all of the players more matches at each event. This didn't seem a bad idea to me and could make for quite an exciting weekend I feel.... ;D I am sure that ALL of the players that have been selected would like to play if their circumstances allowed them to do this and there was the opportunity to play more games.... but unless we suddenly find a nice sponsor to help with the costs involved I think we are likely to find an increasing number of players that will withdraw from some of the matches in the future unless something is done that will change this? I would be interested to know the thoughts of other players on this subject, but as this is probably not the best place to discuss this I will start a new thread about it and we can perhaps see what suggestions come forward there? 8-)

I think you have to realise sav that some people have other priorities in life other than bar billiards. Your comment about being unwilling to play is a very unfair comment because you don't know the players individual circumstances. For me to go to play it involves me finding people to look after my three children for three days(even if they don't want to go there) and even after this it would still cost me in the region of £450 for myself and heather for a short break away and two legs of bar billiards. Your circumstances are different from other people's and I feel your comments are inappropriate.

Cheers Jim, good to hear from you whether we agree or not ;D
I was surprised to be considered for the team as I no longer play opens becasue I cannot afford to waste my actuarily reduced pension on bar billiard opens since I finished work four years ago. Gill gets no pension for several years having had to retreat from teaching. Are my circumstances so different to many out there? I was fortunate enough to be at a couple of events this year because I was transporting tables for AEBBA.
However, if in the team following withdrawals, I will be out to Jersey like a shot to wear that white shirt with the red rose.
Sav.

I am glad that you can honour to jersey like a shot Sav because a lit of people have not got the money to be able to do this. The fact you can actually afford to do this puts you in a different situation than done other people who physically cannot afford this. The fact is Sav everybody has a personal choice to make based on their individual circumstances. Family must come before bar billiards. At the end of the day bb must be the only sport that you have to pay to represent your country without any assistance whatsoever. You are right though Sav we will never agree on this.

KT,
Any idea when the 'Doubtfuls' will start to become yeas or nays please?
Last minute flight booking gets very expensive and it's only six weeks to flying (43 sleeps for Dave ;D).

Are you sure you don't want us to send six Guernsey players over to boost the numbers ?
Jersey are very much "The Old Enemy" to us Tommo.

Sav I would also like to book my flights ASAP as British Airways have some really good prices at the moment (£77 return) for that weekend.... so please could somebody advise what the arrangements are for the hotel and when we are expected to travel out and back?? Many thanks, in anticipation. ;D

Questions have been asked but no input from the captain, so come on Kevin let's have an update on who's playing in the International, then those players that are willing to play can book their flights and hotel!!
They should all have said yes or no by now!
I see that 9/18 (half) are now down as doubtful.
Mark T & Steven S are definite No's.

I feel that the Pairs/singles matches that England v Guernsey works very well and does give you a good night of billiards.
When Guernsey play Jersey we only play a single game with alternative team breaks. I would love to see the singles and pairs format moved over to the Jersey/ Guernsey match. The 3 teams meeting for 1 weekend would be a great event. Having to travel 2 out of 3 years though may not suit everyone. We also struggle for the Internationals away as players choose not travel. The GBBA do cover half the cost for travel of the Guernsey players when in Jersey. Can the AEBBA do the same for the English players?

Keith, I have rung Jersey a couple of times, firstly to Sean le Beauvant and then Graeme le Monnier. Graeme said he will speak to the Chairman and get back to me. Can`t tell you any more than that, sorry.

Sorry if it seems I'm having a moan Kevin but I wish you had updated it differently because some of the posts on this thread are not making any sense now that the original squad has disappeared and it would have been good to see it for future reference!

The latest update I have for everyone is the Jersey committee are still trying to find a Hotel that can hold the competition as well. Apparently the Ambassador (where we`ve been for the last two Internationals) isn`t open and the De Normandie are asking too much for the function room. They are looking at the Sarum Hotel next....watch this space :-/

OK Ladies and Gentlemen, we have some details from Jersey ;D
The Hotel/Venue is the Sarum hotel in New Saint Johns Rd, St Helier JE2 3LD Telephone number is 01534 758163 The prices are for room only (although you can book English bkfast for £7 extra) as the hotel does a lot of self catering. As the hotel is quite close to the town, there are a lot of eating places nearby. Single £36 Double/Twin £50 When booking, ask for Monica
British Airways from Gatwick are by far the cheapest £77.23 return
The two final places for the England side will be filled by Lorin Clough and Geoff Jukes, congrats to both of them.

For those of you who might want to take a look on Google Streetview, it's nowhere near where the post code resolves to. It's about 100yds from the town end of St John's Road.
£36 £37 is a lot for room only in the middle of winter.

JE2 3PG resolves to the junction with the main road, 100yds away.
There is a pub on the corner that shows brekkies on Streetview (Shipwright) and a greasy spoon around the corner (Cheapside Cafe) towards town if you dont want to pay £8 at the hotel.
