First of all, apologies for my false illusion that there was a Lewes Summer League. I've been trying to think back to where I gained that impression and can only find this : I did a 23.010 at the Lewes Masters at the Bridge, Newhaven. It was the pub table, although moved and relevelled. There have been 3 at the Tap. 2 from me and 1 from Lloydy this year. I did have one also in the summer league as well, not sure if that really counts though. So it's obviously not Nigel's fault but I'll blame him anyway ! (He was obviously referring to the Summer League of Brighton.) Two points stem from this: 1) Lewes run a Masters, so obviously Mid Sussex should ! If Warrior is willing to stand by his offer of his firm's sponsorship of the tables, I'll stand by mine of supplying a couple of smart perpetual trophies. 2) Why don't Lewes and Mid Sussex run a combined Summer League? This would swell the ranks that would otherwise be depleted by those of us who do not have the stamina for all-season-round-billiards. Re Jock's comment: "I always believed that the charity cup was aimed at those of us that are less experienced, or those that are in the position of not playing regularly enough in the main season". Quite so, but you need a full contingent of league teams, so that the weaker teams can turn over the stronger ones in the first place ! This will only happen in season.

Lewes didn't run a Masters for last season...... >:( :'(
If somebody could let me have a phone number for Tarratts then I can look into the costs and start to put together a proposal to put before the Committee.
I'm quite happy to do the work in setting it all up..... and providing sponsorship....... if there is enough people interested in supporting it by playing in it....!! ;D
With regards to the idea of a "joint summer league" with Lewes, this is certainly something that could be suggested..... although I know that a number of (the more dedicated!) players already play in Brighton Summer League. 8-)

So it's obviously not Nigel's fault but I'll blame him anyway ! (He was obviously referring to the Summer League of Brighton.) Ha you can pin the blame on me if you want Tommo ;) Good luck with sorting out the Mid Sussex Masters. Lewes' ran for two years but sadly seems to have died despite talk about it being revived. As in Mid Sussex a structure is in place with a player performance list where you could easily take a top 16 from. (You could easily use the Brighton/ Worthing models if you want to include compeition results as well) I got the feeling in Lewes it was only the top players who were willing to put in the effort to run the competition, and that the commitee did not do enough to keep it running after it had 2 very good competitions. However Brighton and Worthing Masters have going on a long time now (the next Brighton Masters will be the 16th). They are almost as prestigious as the respective leagues singles titles.

Yes Lewes did have a masters comp for a couple of years and then rather annoyingly it fizzled out over the last couple of season, (just as I managed to qualify as well). Shame, seems to me that Lewes committee were not particularly good at motivating players to take part.
Congrats indeed to the sportsman on joining us up their wi the big boys? Will be interesting to see who stays up and who goes down.

Its all sounding a little elitist to me, we lose the one comp that encouraged the 'newer' players and we bring in one that only the 'top' 16 can enter. I think we have missed the point a little here.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for a Mid Sussex Masters and should I qualify I would definitely play.
If the committee is right tand there is no way we can play the charity alongside the league as we have done, therefore that only leaves the summer. If no one wants to play during the summer then we LOSE the charity cup altogether, in my mind sacrificing the many to satisfy the few. I for one enjoyed those first few charity matches leading into the start of the season, so what if the season is 'too long' we all survived didn't we.

Looked at in the cold light of day, I'm inclined to agree. My original suggestion of a Masters early on in the thread was only as an afterthought - a chance throwaway comment. Others homed in on it. You yourself said it was long overdue. But I would say that Priority 1 has to be to save the Charity League, in whatever format.

I have been inspired by this thread and will now arrange for the 1st Cornish Masters to take place tomorrow at The Cornish Inn, Gunnislake ... I know that BOTH players will be there (I'm getting a lift) and the format for the evening will probably be: 7 frames of Bar Billiards followed by a similar number of games of Pool, winner obviously being the player who wins most games. We dont need to arrange tables because we already have the one bb table and one pool table needed. I feel confident of being at least runner up ;D The 1st Cornish Masters was played last night... ResultBar Billiards.. Bernie Lawrance beat Roger Hook 5-2 Pool... Bernie Lawrance beat Roger Hook 4-3 Which makes me the Inaugural Cornish Master 8-) Great attendance by everyone in the League (both of us) and superb hospitality by the landlord who came down after last orders and watched the pool games (and had a couple of games himself) We make the most of our evenings down here ;D ;D _____________________________________________ I think the idea of having the Charity cup as a knockout on 3 seperate evenings sounds the best solution... it keeps the competition without making too many more evenings for the lightweights ;D

That just leaves me to try to work out a format and some dates to be able to put it forward at the next Committee Meeting. ;D

Congratulations to Cornwall's Number One Ranked player. 8-)
You realise you'll have to follow the 'Masters' up now with a League Singles, County Singles, Captains Competition, and Seniors Competition. :o Also a Handicap Singles and an Off-The-Spot Competition. ;D
You could even expand the County to a West Country Invitation Singles for Cornwall, Devon and Somerset.
The possibilities are endless. ;)

Many thanks to all for your imput, much appreciated. ;D
However, we should not lose sight of the fact that there are only a FEW OF US who are commenting on this...... and we are among the more enthusiastic for our game! 8-) ;)
We do have to bear in mind that the majority of the players in Mid-Sussex do not necessarily share our enthusiasm....... they do not enter any of the League Competitions, would never think of entering an Open, they turn up to play once a week (normally 5 minutes before the start of a match! :o) and many of them don't pick up a cue to practice from one week to the next.....! ::) :(
I could understand that many of them would see a Masters Event as "elitist"...... however they would probably not be in contention to play in it anyway!! ;) So, from that point of view, either an evening or weekend would be a good way to hold that event.
It is the format for playing a "Charity Cup" event that is giving me most cause for concern. I would like to see this continued as I feel that it does encourage the new / weaker players to play our game..... which can only be healthy for our future.
However, I'm not sure that a special "one-off" event would either be supported..... or be the right format.
So, that probably leaves us with the option of one of the following:-
1) A straight knock-out competition, which would add 3 extra weeks to the season. 2) 4 Groups of 4 teams, playing each other once with the winners going through to semi-finals..... adding 5 extra weeks to the season. 3) Playing a one-off game (possibly 2?) of either doubles or triples, at the end of each League Match, with a separate Charity Cup League Table to decide the overall winners at the end of the season.
The biggest problem with any of these 3 suggestions is that one of them would need to be agreed before the fixures are finalised and sent out...... which I know is very imminent! :-/
I can send an e-mail round to all of the teams to try to get some feedback from League Members...... unless anybody else has a better suggestion??

Where's Aunty Ros she normally would take part in ths great debate !!!
What you need to remember is that as well as a 30 week league season you also have 3 weeks for cup games which nobody has mentioned so to add another 5 weeks on to that would mean that we should have started by now, I think that the 3 extra weeks is pssibly the only way to go maybe we could bring the start forward by a week.
If you remember we talked about this at the AGM & voted against The Big farmers suggustion of extra games at the end of the night for good reasons we also voted to let the committee format the fixture list the best way they thought best when we knew how many teams we had it's great the we have 2 new teams it's what we all want & have been crying out for, on the registration forms there was a box marked "do you wish to play charity matches" it would be nice to hear from Jenny how many teams said yes to that. It would not bother me playing an extra 3 weeks but it wont as metioned before give the new teams a chance to "turn over the big teams" but it would keep the comp going & produce a final if it was as good as last year,it's worthwhile to see teams like Watermill B & the Bravo's enjoy playing in a final then it's worth doing. Phew.

A good summary of the situation from BB Warrior.
Fair comment from Ian - positive suggestions. Take care to read it carefully, there are some really valid points there.
And the way forward as suggested by the Warrior is the way forward.
We await the questionnaire - which is quite expeditious with the new season approaching.
Make the Charity Cup the main topic (on which the committee are seeking members' guidance).
Thanks in advance for your efforts, Dave, the league is lucky to have someone with your energies acting on its behalf.

Excellent summery my big bald beautiful friend. The straight knockout format combined with with my summer league idea could work just fine. Adding only 3 weeks to the season, (which my summer league idea would have done if players were rotated properly, but no mind). I'm all for a Masters Comp buddy, my elitist comment was purely based on the bigger picture of losing the charity which is in no way elitist and gaining a Masters comp which obviously is elitist. Count me in mate I will help in any way I can. We wont hear much from Jen I'm afraid as they is way for a family wedding. I also don't think anything will be done prior to league fixtures being finalized as we won't have a meeting before season starts. Perhaps Roy or someone else with all the league members contact details could e-mail all those with e-mail or post a quick feed back form to all the pubs, addressed to the team Captains. Short of someone sitting down and ringing every member of the league I don't know how we would get enough feed back in time to formulate a plan prior to league start. As for not many people commenting on this subject, its not been 'officially' made public as far as I know. Most of the members will only really find out when the fixtures list is given to them all. I'm going to suggest that one of our illustrious moderators type up an idiot proof set of instructions on how to join this forum and how to use it, maybe we could get Roy or Jen (whoever sends the fixtures and contact details) to add it in, it might encourage more from M-S to join us and give their opinions. Can't hurt can it. Or perhaps the M-S League website really does need to be sorted out post haste.

Following on from the warriors idea's if we made the charity cup a straight knockout adding only three weeks to the season, it would have to be played after season finished and before finals night meaning season would finish on Wed June 2nd, then how about instead of the 2 week break till finals night we change that to one week meaning finals night would be Wed 10th June with the AGM still to follow.

Or, we could always just push the start of the League season back 3 weeks..... but there didn't seem to be much support for that in Committee - beyond those talking on here now! 8-) I will post any comments that I get in reply to my e-mail, so watch this space....!! ;D

Have replied to your e-mail Dave with a more refined and simpler idea, will await your comments. Following on from that ignore the second e-mail as I noticed Roy was on the e-mail list DOH Also regarding the donations to charity falling would the league be prepared to consider each team donating £1 per night, a mere 20p each from the players in each team each match night. I.E 16 teams = £16 x 33 = £528 to donate by season end, not including any monies put in the boxes as well.

That's a shame Christmas eve & New Years eve both fall on a Wednesday night we could under normal circumstances have gained a week. I feel if we went down the straight knock out 3 week route we could have 2 at the beginning to kick off the season & the last one at the end of the season.

Or perhaps the M-S League website really does need to be sorted out post haste. No need now for further comment from me apart from to say that I will not go back on my word to resurrect the M-S Website when those who pledged to assist me can spare the time. However its main purpose will be to document/restore all our history, and meanwhile this Forum should provide a more than adequate service on forthcoming events, results and communications.

I think there is some good suggestions here for the Charity cup, but please remember like Sparky says, ! week before finals night in impossible. It is a lot of hard work trying to work out the table plan. The charity makes it hard work so leaving me a week to do it is definitely a no no. But I'm sure we can come up with something.

Yeah good points mama bear and sparky.
I have replied to the warriors e-mail but here is the gist of my proposal.
Season to start on the 10th Sept with 1st Charity Match Second Match to be played week after Team Cup/Plate Quarter Finals 28th Jan 09 League would then finish 20th May 09 Play final Charity Match 1 week later on 27th May. Finals Night 10th June AGM 24th June 09
By splitting the matches into 3 across the season I think those who don't like the charity cup, yes there are some, will hardly notice it. As will those who don't want to start season too early or finish it too late.

1. Like your programme and the thinking behind it. Gets my vote.
2. You will get your website, just be patient (as I have been !) BigTJ and Dave Anscombe have proved that much can be done in a short space of time (see the new Worthing site). Like most things in life with me, I start off slowly, then build up a head of steam, and then once I've got going there's no stopping me ! :D

i feel for charity it would be a great day where we do a limes tournement as this will encourage new players and make money i am sure with tarrot being asked nicely we can get the tables in this way any one who wants to enter can and it doesnt affect the season just earns money for charity at the end of the day it is not what day we can make amazin or how we can make the season longer or shorter it is about the charity we are supporting and that is the main subject in the topic in my eyes.
