Not wishing to upset the smokers amongst the BB fraternity but I hope the no smoking law could signal a new era in BB Pubs and clubs will need to entice more people through the doors and putting in new tables could be an excellent idea The problem will be having enough local new players interested enough to regularly compete in the depths of winter

Excellent game Martin, only played it for a short while due to my inaebriated state over the weekend, but is highly addictive One small observation, the balls do sometimes defy the laws of gravity and hang over the holes

Will be sorry to see you go Glenn :( Some of your reasons for going/cutting down echo my feelings when I gave up playing. It took me over 25 years to come back.Don't leave it that long

I echo your sentiments about the attendance at the AGM. Ours was poorly attended this year as well.I even went although I was not a fully fledged member of the team

A question This may have been covered before,so excuse me if it has In the Worthing league our captains nominate the games except in cup matches, which are played as drawn How do the other leagues sort out the playing order? When I played 25 years ago it was played as drawn but the better players still managed to come out on top of the averages although our games were much tighter Played as drawn will always throw up the unexpected I know this is not strictly a Handicap theory but in a way it is making the games fairer

Why not call it The United Kingdom Open? Not Invitational as has been suggested on another message board

This is in reply to Glenns post of 3.27 It will always be a case of which comes first (chicken and egg syndrome),tables or players
I have persuaded my son to partner me in the Worthing Doubles this year and I got him registered,he had never played before up until about a month ago.He has picked up the fundamentals quite quickly. Will he carry on playing after the comp?,probably not.We already have 7 players fighting for 5 places and 2 teams already at the Elms. Could the landlord put another table in?. I dont think there would be enough interest to make up another team that would not be getting thrashed every week.No matter how enthusiastic you are ,if you are getting hammered week after week it soon wanes After going to the Downview for the Masters on Saturday I thought why are they not running 2 or 3 teams in the local leagues?.They have enough room, they have not even got a team!
In reply to regg3y An excellent idea.I think I have bitten off a bit too much this year by coming straight into the Worthing Premier and would relish the chance to play a couple of seasons at a lower level to re acclimatise myself

I agree with Glenn that the profile of the game must be improved and I fully see the problems of doing this Local competitions leading onto a national finals in a centralized venue may be the best option There is always a chance of one of the big names falling early in this type of comp as happens in the FA Cup,although I would not have any seeding in the competition The format could be say a Worthing league comp with the best 32 players going onto the next round along with Brighton 32,Lewes 32, Mid Sussex 32,etc,etc Obviously some leagues are larger than others an numbers would need to be adjusted at the time and also depending on the entries There would then be a play off at a regional neutral venue probably over 2 days where the surviving 32/64 players would go through to the next rounds The same format would be used for the other areas and of course more rounds would probably have to be inserted into the calender depending on the interest ,ending up with the remaining 64 players in the national finals I think 64 players over 2 days in a national final would be manageable This idea would mean the tournament would be spread throughout the year The problem with this would be when to hold the rounds as some players are already playing 2/3 times a week as well as inter league matches I can remember the old News of The World Darts before the Pro's really got involved used to be won by unknown players,so could this happen in our sport?.It is a possibility Excuse the ramblings but I am sure you get the general idea

I agree with big tj about trying to bring new players in to the game.Remembering back to when I started playing in the late 70's all of my team were in their early 20's Last year after joining up with the Elms B team I am the youngest player at 50 I know in those days that Pool hadn't taken off, there were no home PC's etc etc but we had more than enough young players coming into the game to challenge the established names

Hi Tommo I had completely forgotten about this.Looking at the figures maybe I should have carried on! Thanks for the information I have just remembered the title in that year was won by the White Horse in a play off against the Mucky Duck. Both having finished with identical records I think

Hi Tommo I know the names but when I was playing in the 2nd and 3rd divisions we hardly ever went to Horsham for matches Most of our games were in Billingshurst and the surrounding areas.I think the furthest we used to go was the Crown at Capel I did play at the Green Dragon once(think it was a doubles match) and I remember playing at a tiny pub in East Street which I think was an inter league match. Too many years have passed, and a lot of alcohol has been downed for me to remember the name

Hi Tommo Yes I forgot about Tony Franks.I dont remember him playing much for the Mucky Duck in the league though I finished playing in the summer of 1981 due to moving down to Worthing, so never got to play in the 1st division I was asked to carry on as captain but during the 80-81 season we somtimes struggled to field a reasonable side and the travelling to and from Worthing in my old Avenger was not too pleasant I Was surprised the A team left the pub but once the table was moved from the main bar into the games room at the back the atmosphere was never the same The Coot were just emerging as a force in the early 80's somewhat due to a certain Mr J Slee playing

Whe I first started in 1978 there were 2 teams who dominated the Billingshurst league sadly both now a distant memory The Mucky Duck A and The White Horse at Bury The Mucky Duck won the All England pub championship in 1980 and included John and Peter Thayre,Colin Peskett,Peter MacNamara and originally Brian Picking When I first started the Billingshurst league was expanded to 3 divisions and the Mucky Duck entered a B team of which I was captain in 1979-1980 and 1980-1981 As Tommo said the Five Oaks were a great team and they still had a team in the late 70's but nowhere near as good as they had been

Hi Pete I don't know if Colin is still around I left the Billingshurst area in 1981 and I believe he switched to playing at the Alfold Social Club along with the Thayres Colin was a good player and he was a wonderful captain and always got the best out of any team he was associated with He was probably the only one of the Mucky Duck team that regularly frequented the pub because he lived quite close in Rudgwick

Mostly I taught myself to play, but I did have the help of Colin Peskett who in 1978 ish-1981 was the Captain of The Mucky Duck A team in the Billingshurst League and also the captain of the all conquering Bell team from the Horsham league I also had the privilege of playing against and watching the great John Thayre for about a year before I started playing seriously in 1978
