Please feel free Clive but I think you'll have a hard time with this one ;) Wedding problems force sale unfortunately. I've got others as you know but this is my baby! I won't be letting this go cheap I tell you that! You wouldn't have heard as it's only small time, but we have been somewhat celebrities in our own back yards lately! [/URL]

Sorry to hear of the hitches over the wedding, Enzo. Hope you gain some compensation - though this sort of thing takes time. In your position I'd be whisking my bride off to Gretna Green, and then have the wedding bash a year later when finances were sorted. :-/
But then again, sacrificing your bar billiards table for the cause demonstrates that you have your priorities right. ;)

Thanks for the kind words Clive, and you're right, we've had to look at all the possibilities and have exhausted most from idea A to about P at the moment where P if I recall correctly was eloping to Hawaii and live streaming the wedding back to people in the UK! I know, it seems way over the top the other way but it was an option nonetheless!
I really don't want to get rid of her but I don't think I can make her hold on any longer, it'll be 9 years this year, it's well overdue!

You've been with her since you were both 12 years old :o 13 yes, it's my birthday in 3 weeks :) Especially after all this latest drama happened we were strongly contemplating eloping to Hawaii or somewhere and having 2 weeks hoping islands ;) But after remembering how much planning has done into this for 5+ years (unofficially ::)) from my other half, I just couldn't take that away from her! I can always make more money, she's worth it ;) But then again, sacrificing your bar billiards table for the cause demonstrates that you have your priorities right. ;) It was a 'joint' decision from both of us :-/ I think she wants the space in the spare bedroom for future Hickmans to come.. hmm nice hint there I didn't pick up on, she'd never take my bar billiards away from me! Reckon you got a decent price for it there, Enzo, let's hope it will be going to a good home. :) Yup I think that was fair, worse condition tables going for £500-700 lately, but yes nice to get in the top bracket of what these tables go for :) 89 Watchers and over 200 bids (including automatic bids)... so there's still a want for bar billiards! Hoorah! Tempted to put one of my other beauties up for sale :)

Yes I wouldn't baulk at a B-B Ltd Kent (Stelling Minnis) table, they did an excellent job on refurbishing 'high mileage' tables that went through their hands. Agree £1k is too expensive - unless buying from them direct. £800-£850 would be more realistic unless everything still absolutely pristine. As it 'appens....... It's the same as this one which has already gone:

Looks like a standard-width SAMs, but the question would have to be asked - location Ilkley, N.Yorks: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-Table-/321173401810Cloth looks a bit patchy, but Buy-it-now of £490 does not look unreasonable for a good, solid SAMs. Listing ended, presumably snapped up at the Buy-it-now price of £490.[edit 02/08/13 - see developments below]

I was going by the 'squashed diamond' formation of 50s and 100/200 although it's difficult to judge by the angle of the photo. And 50's didn't look too far down the table to get an easy break shot. Def. prudent to check the width with the vendor before bidding. More than the one photo would also be nice. [edit - looks like we'll never know now !]Re-listed 02/08/13.......looks like the previous deal for £490 fell through: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-Table-/321178004154Bidding has ended on this item. No-one making the required opening bid of £350. Relisted 09/08/13: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-Table-/321182277986?Went to a single bid of £350. Another amazing bargain !

Here's another quality SAMS, on sale from Rugby: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiards-table-full-size-/261264469776Vendor says ex-Pub, and it has the NBBA round 'approved' sticker - usually a good sign. Note the engraving on the diamond by the handle "Property of Bar Billiards Kent". This means it was once maintained by the operator in Stelling Minnis, Kent which usually bears witness to a table that's been looked after. Went for £449 after 9 bids. An absolute steal !

SAMs from Lincoln, seems to be quite an early one: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bar-billiards-table-/200961710049Me like this table very much, a wonderful collection of accessories to go with it: you even get a spade to whack the opponent with should he get too greedy and hog the table ! Auction ended, no-one prepared to make an opening bid of £350.

Am reprising my former role as 'Dr Watson' to Sav's 'Holmes' for this one, located in St Ives, Cambs: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-Billiard-Table-/161123123574Firstly I don't think it's the thrown-out Nelson's Head table which I've played on and which was a Jelkes. A 'social club for adults with learning difficulties' is mentioned and it's more likely a table being sold from its premises. Secondly the 'restoration' by Jeff Drinkwater & Sons must have been a long time ago, judging by the state of the ripped cloth. Finally, the dimensions quoted indicate a standard SAMS but the bowls at the bottom of the foot adjusters seem to have gone missing. Over to you, Holmes ! Went for £570 after 33 bids.

Another standard SAMS, location Ongar, Essex : www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Beautiful-Antique-Bar-Billiard-Table-Slate-Bed-Used-/121193741951Refurb'd by Hubble & Freeman just five years ago...hmmm....surely the pockets shouldn't start sinking in that time ?? Other drawback is the apparent absence of a bar mechanism. Vendor will be lucky to recoup anything like his outlay for the refurbishment from the sound of it. Went for £850 after 20 bids. Well you can knock me down with a feather !

Hello,
You will notice that above the return tray and below the points value tags, that the front has a recess withwise. This recess is in both parts of the panel, which is made up of 2 pieces of wood., top and bottom This is like my table and is different from most Sams, in that I have seen, which have just "half" of this recess, i.e. In the top part. The sides of my table are also different from most that I have seen, in that there is a small triangle piece of wood, covering the return slope board. Which design is most common? Does this feature indicate age! Does it mean that the return tray is lower, or is the top panel not so high? I hope you understand my questions.
What is the significance of the NBBA sticker? Does this also indicate age, as the NBBA was replaced by AEBBA.
If was a good price, why didn't any members buy it?

Does that mean that league players, play by resting the cue on the leatherette?

Hi Scotty, Welcome to the forum. Good to see someone taking an interest in the buying and selling threads and would be intrigued to know if I am speaking to a dealer, a potential private purchaser - or someone with a passing interest.
And sorry for the delay in replying, have been involved in other things this weekend - but I will have a go now at answering your questions !
Talking Jelkes tables, there are marked distinctions between 'pre-war' and 'post-war' - the dates they were being mass-produced being 1934-39 and 1945-50. The earlier version are usually recognisable by having round legs, as opposed to hexagonal on the later version - which also had a lower tray. The pre-war ones having more miles on the clock are more likely to be the ones which went through Bar Billiards (Kent)'s mass refurbishment and interchangability exercise.
The 'NBBA approved' sticker is usually an indication of a table from these eras which had regular and careful maintenance. Bear in mind that in those halcyon days, bar billiards was all the rage and rental tables would be played most nights of the week and there would be a queue of people waiting to play them !
A lot of players do, and the leatherette was probably introduced to minimise the damage caused by constant friction. My home table had slight splintering to the oak which I have overcome with a thick layer of varnish, and many years ago I took part in a 3-day marathon and at the end of it my cue was shaped like a bow !
Good question. AEBBA will sometimes snap up a high quality item to improve the championship set, but are concentrating more on repaying investors at present and the price would have to be right. Most of us wanting our own home tables for private use are already fixed up, and we are not really the type of people who want to start trading to make a fast buck. I am trying to channel any 'narrow' tables I see in the direction of the growing Norwich league, and by covering all table types with assessments I am purely trying to ensure that any potential buyers amongst our members don't end up with unwittingly purchasing something that turns out to be a disappointment.
