And the best possible start for Jessica Ennis - 1st place and a personal best in the 100m hurdles. 8-) And finishes with another PB and win in the 200m sprint - tops the points table after the first day. 8-) Unfortunately Womens Football Team GB lost 0-2 to Canada in the Qr-final. The men still in, though, and play Korea 7.30pm tomorrow for a place in the Semifinals* *predictably we lost in a penalty shootout !

Jessica Ennis is one 800m race away from winning the Heptathlon.
But Silver at least (and could be gold) for Andy Murray and Laura Robson in the tennis Mixed Doubles. Laura plays with a maturity that defies her 18 years and I think we're seeing TWO future Wimbledon champions in the making. :-/ (They will play Myrnyl and Azarenka in the Final).

Slightly off topic - ever seen such a bad loser as Mark Cavendish ? Talk about counting your chickens....... ::) Masterstroke by the BBC: what do you do with someone who is rude to your interviewer and snaps 'don't you know anything about cycling?' Offer him a place on the commentary team. Probably worth paying him a 20k contract to have him sitting there watching everyone else's success and having to be polite and say nice things about people - whilst giving his expert opinion. ;D Good bit of irony, well done BBC. 8-)

GOLD and a new World Record for our lady cyclists Dani King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell in the Team Pursuit. 8-) It gets better and better.... Sir Paul spotted in the crowd and everyone sings the chorus to Hey Jude. Magical moment. ;D

4th in the 4 x 100m medley relay.....unlucky. An amazing 18th Gold medal for the retiring Michael Phelps (next best by an Olympian is 9).
Now for some athletics........
GOLD for Heptathlete Jessica Ennis in case there was ever any doubt.
Incredibly she doesn't let up at all and smashes the field in the last 800m race. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Greg Rutherford GOLD in the Long Jump. 8-) - our first champion in this event since Lynn Davies in 1964. 8-)
Now for Mo Farrah in the 10,000m (run over 25 laps). :D
Oh yes ! Mo Farrah wins a great 10,000m GOLD - first ever British winner for over 100 years. Took on Kenyans, Ethiopians, beat the lot! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D His training partner, Rupp (USA) wins the silver. What a night !

Of course, football provides the usual blot on the landscape - GB Men lose to S.Korea on penalties. ::) ::) ::) Am I alone in having the view that it is morally wrong to have Professional footballers such as Ryan Giggs, Sturridge, etc taking part in the Olympic Games? Surely it would make more sense to pick a team from the best of the players in the Blue Square/Conference who do not have a contract ? People will say that Tennis is a similar case, but at least we're seeing the best available representatives, and not just a half-baked motley crew assembled at random. >:(

As much as stirridge is a decent professional he still hasnt played much at all for england. Same with buttland, hes had some experience and is now prepared for england duty. Plus the olympics is for everyone to show off the best their country has to offer and with all due respect to the blue square premier, they arentvthe best we have and wont have a potentially fourishing career ithe game. Itll be like swapping mo farah for, well me :D and that is my two penneth ;) :)

I think you're missing what the Olympics is about, Phil: it's about athletes building up to the peak of their power with a view to achieving ultimate accolades at the Olympics, and often then having to retire, making way for their successor(s).
Examples: Victoria Pendleton *, Bradley Wiggins, Katherine Grainger, Michael Phelps. It shouldn't be about giving a professional footballer future experience for playing in the World Cup.
Picking amateur footballers might have led to a 'discovery' leading to a future professional career - as has happened in the past with boxing. The burden of expectation always seems to do for our International football team - as was the case here.

GOLD for Ben Anslie in Finn Class (sailing) - his fourth in Olmpics! And Andrew Simpson and Ian Percy win SILVER in pairs.
Andy Murray is marmalising Federer at the moment and looks unstoppable. Meanwhile Max Whitlock is set for either silver or gold in the pommel horse. 8-) 8-)

Meanwhile Max Whitlock is set for either silver or gold in the pommel horse. 8-) 8-) Turned out to be Bronze for Max. Overtaken at the end by Louis Smith (SILVER for GB) but Hungarian Krisztian Berki worthy winner of the gold as he brought those funny scissory leg moves into his routine which the others didn't do.

SILVER for Andy and Laura after storming the first set 6-2. Typical Robson game at the moment, she can live with the best for one set and then it all falls apart. Time on her side though....she has big shots but not the agility round the court and needs to reduce her unforced error count. A great honour though.

Thanks Big Phil, Despite my comments about millionaire professionals taking part in the Olympics, I'd still like to have seen David Beckham in Team GB - if only to see him play one last time, and to see whether or not he's still got it. ;)

The medals keep coming........Gymnast Beth Tweddle wins BRONZE on the uneven bars - our first ever - and GB's Natasha Jonas put up a good show in the lightweight womens boxing - a sport making its debut at this Olympics - winning her first round bout but then losing out to Ireland's Katie Taylor who has secured a medal. Meanwhile it seems that Morrissey doesn't approve of the recent lift to our country's spirits: news.sky.com/story/969426/morrissey-olympic-spirit-like-nazi-germanyWhat a miseryguts ! I can't take seriously any utterings that come from the mouth of someone who sings dire monotonous dirges with a tree sticking out of his back pocket........... >:(

Team GB win gold in the Team Showjumping, after a jump-off following a tie with the Netherlands. 8-) Our first for 60 years at this event. Good for 54-y-o Nick Skelton ! 8-)
Victoria Pendleton eases through to the Semi-Finals of the Womens Sprint and races again tomorrow. 8-) Britain's Jason Kenny faces France's Gregory Bauge in the mens final......and he takes the Gold Medal ! 8-) Good gesture from Sir Chris Hoy to sacrifice his own place in the lineup !

Dai Greene just outside the medals, 4th in the 400m Hurdles. :'(
Ordinary 400m final in half-an-hour's time. Spare a thought for 'blade runner' Oscar Pistorius (S.A) who made history by taking part in the Semis........and it's a first-ever gold for Grenada.
So that's it for today, let's have a recap with the medal table:
G S B Total 1 China 31 19 14 64 2 United States 28 15 19 62 3 G.B.& N.I. 18 11 11 40 4 'Nice' Korea 11 5 6 22 5 France 8 9 9 26 6 Russia 7 17 17 41 7 Italy 7 6 4 17 8 Kazakhstan 6 - 1 7 9 Germany 5 10 7 22 10 Hungary 4 1 3 8

Not going so well today so far.........
Phillips Idowu crashed out in triple jump qualifying.
And our Javelin girl Goldie Sayers was 20m short of the qualifying standard with all her throws, due to a prior elbow injury (torn ligaments).
