Hi Alan, Sure you'll be doing your usual "making of a silk purse" job on this one. Looking forward to seeing the finished product ..... tommo PS I've just repaired the backboard on the table that Sav sold me that we put in the Mill House. It got ripped away (the hinges flew off) when it left the pub. I managed to source the matching bottom hinge halves (good old Ivor) and with four half-inch woodscrews and a bit of 3-in-1 oil - job done ! I hope so Tommo Sides and Ends of body prepared (see photo) ....There is some beautiful grain pattern in the wood............real shitty weather today....not even nice enough to walk the 30mtrs to the workshop . But the soaking wet postman has just (Sunday) delivered the 2 replacement gears that had shattered last week in my lathe , so its rebuild that next week , if i can remember how it came apart !!! Just been sitting quietly sketching a manual way of operating the drop bar " simply " and i now have a reasonable plan . So the finished BB Table will be simple , easy to transport but be fit for purpose ! And will be sold on ebay/facebook market place at a low cost , allowing someone to play the game without having to pay the extremely high prices currently being asked for BB Tables on these sale areas . The little hinges you mention on the Jelks back board , if anyone else needs any you can buy them from Wixroyd Ltd .

Aquired this top it will eventually be a Narrow Table , I am going to try a MDF bed i made , but if it dont work to well then it will get a slate one . I only have the top frame (which is a bit chewed away at one end , it stood on end in a stone outbuilding for at least 40 years , thus the water damage ) and the cushion woods to start with , but i i have other ingredients to build it with , black legs and sides and ends of body made from Utile from West Africa ( The utile has stood in barn on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors for the last 60 plus years, the label for £20 was put on it 50 years ago when it was 8 foot long x 18inches wide. The drop bar will be manual with a Salter timer . Pic 1 ....The Top Pic 2.....The ingredients Pic 3 ... Utile (Looks like Mahogany)

Denis Atkins helped with a mould to reform the male 4TPI threads.
AEBBA bought a thread cutter from the States but a smaller diameter, not fitting either of the existing threads. That has the advantage of leaving thicker walls on the sockets but complicates table set-up and risk of cross threading, Matt J. has the cutter last I heard
Fine Tools in Germany do the 4TPI cutter principally found on octagonal legged tables.
I don't think 3D printing of the sockets would be as easy as the rings as it's difficult to photograph and scan a picture of a hole!
I'm making enquiries in the lathe world but it's difficult during social distancing. I feel rigid plastics or aluminium could be a better way forward for the fragile female sockets.

Two local public near to were i live in Cheshire , Yes , I know bar billiards is not played in pubs around here , but pool is and both of these pubs have pool tables they are following the 2.1 part (quoted below) of keeping customers and visitors safe , Keeping indoor and soft play areas closed , these 2 pubs are advising that the pool tables will NOT BE available for customer use as social distancing around the table cannot be governed and also dual handling of the games balls during play is unavoidable . I would imagine that Bar Billiards faces the same problems ? Landlords / Mangers will not want to litigation regarding health and safety and possible future claims against them . It is a very very difficult time for them but just reopening is a major step , without the added complication of traditional games ! SAD BUT TRUE !! I know there are some on here so lets wish them all the best and support them by accepting there decisions and behaving in a common sense manner . Steps that will usually be needed: 2.1 Keeping customers and visitors safe Ensuring any changes to entrances, exits and queue management take into account reasonable adjustments for those who need them, including disabled customers. For example, maintaining pedestrian and parking access for disabled customers. Reminding customers who are accompanied by children that they are responsible for supervising them at all times and should follow social distancing guidelines. Looking at how people move through the venue and how you could adjust this to reduce congestion and contact between customers, for example, queue management or one-way flow, where possible. Planning for maintaining social distancing guidelines (2m, or 1m with risk mitigation where 2m is not viable, is acceptable) in the event of adverse weather conditions, being clear that customers cannot seek shelter indoors unless social distancing can be maintained. Working with neighbouring businesses and local authorities to consider how to spread the number of people arriving throughout the day for example by staggering opening hours; this will help reduce demand on public transport at key times and avoid overcrowding. Determining if schedules for essential services and contractor visits can be revised to reduce interaction and overlap between people, for example, carrying out services at night. Keeping indoor and soft play areas closed. For guidance on opening outdoor playgrounds safely, see guidance for managing playgrounds published by The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Researched Alan's vice clamps a bit further and found canvas stretching pliers for canvas picture framing, look ideal as I have difficulty in gripping the cloth and pulling it tight enough as I get more senile. Watch the leverage bit at 4 mins Pair of the black pliers on order! I like the look of them myself , a lot less painful on the fingers . Well spotted , Chris , there might be a pair coming my way soon .

I think I'd be patient on a table as there could be a few available when lockdown ends and pubs start trading again and socially distanced space is necessary. I cannot see tables being played upon unfortunately, There's nothing on Ebay at present that I'd spend my pennies on, typical cracked slate on the Walton-on-Thames one so beware. Alan might have something nice tucked away ooop narf. I will have 2 traditional SAMS on ebay soon one in 6/7 days and a second in about 4/5 weeks . Both will be re-furbed and both will have traditional clock/mechanisms set to free play ~( but if required they could have the coin operation as well) The one after them will be a NARROW TABLE . The BB Table i have on at the moment is a hybrid build with an electric / mechanism with a traditional pull handle , not for for everyone but it does the job .

Hi Tilde, As a rough guide, a slate-based table weighs the same as a 20-stone man, so a four man lift (get away with three if they are lusty !) For home use, you'd probably be best advised to go for a Riley as they're lighter than the others - bearing in mind that you're taking it up a flight of stairs. The Stoke-on-Trent one on eBay at present might turn out to be a good purchase....... Good luck ! tommo
Also the Rileys legs are easy to remove , the Riley would be the easiest to get up a narrow twisty / turny staircase . The Rileys legs are also the easiest to break and split if you drag it across a floor , in fact a little shuv on a carpeted floor can will probably split a leg at the top . The Riley on EBAY in Stoke -on -Trent looks like a solid oak one , but they were originally asking £1500.00 for it , thats a decent Jelks price !! I am only 15 miles away from Choke-on -Stench............so if any ones wants to buy and then get it r-clothed ....re-furbed , I could collect it for them , do the needed work and then they arrange collection from me . At extremely low rates .

The doctor phoned earlier and said I had wet wet wet syndrome. “What’s that? I asked. “Do you have any numbness in your extremities?” he asked. “Yes, I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes..” And none stolen from you Alan

Hi again Elie. When you say 'laminate' are you referring to the playing surface? Unfortunately Rileys are the tables we have least experience with on the mainland. Alan Mee has refurbished one recently so I expect he'll reply. We normally encounter Jelks or Sams in mainland England or Burroughs and Watts in the Channel Islands. Rileys are the next most common but rarely seen in league play. They were made to the same standard as the other three just appear a bit more lightly built, it would have had a slate so a laminate playing surface is a damage replacement. It's probably from the fifties / early sixties. Not a great fan of speed cloth on a laminate playing surface as imperfections will be more obvious in the slower travel of the balls, but would rather that than the more common mistake of cheap coarse napped cloth where you have to clout the balls and there is no finesse to the game. We are having proper rings for the holes 3D printed but cannot get at the CAD files until lockdown ends. Done that Sav , have sent him a message with my email address etc etc then i can send pictures and videos if needed .
The laminate he is talking about is the table lower body build material , its conti-board (faced chipwood) When i get Rileys I remake the lower body in solid wood oak or Mahogany . The earlier Rileys were solid , its seems to be when they changed to Riley Burwat that they started using 'laminate'
Hope your keeping OK and i get to have a beer with you sometime...........anytime....whenever !!!
Alan

Please keep the attachment sizes down and compressed as you have mostly done earlier. As mentioned many times the forum has a finite space available for attachments as nobody will pay monthly to increase it, it is a constant fight for me to edit and compress attachments and it is still currently 75% full. Our total limit is still only 200 meg and there were 37 attachments in this one thread over the last six weeks, several are duplicated. We only have 50 meg free and there is 2 meg gone in the one thread. oops sorry Sav . i thought i had shrunk em ( i had , but not enough ) Have you done them or do i need to remove and edit them ??? Must try harder Hope your keeping safe and resting them hips Alan

Sorry Alan, just being nosey. SW London used to be quite well represented for (non-league) tables - Merton, Wimbledon, Raynes Park etc but my search for a pub to visit after football (AFC Wimbledon) continues.
No Problem Tommo , The table i am building at the moment will made from pieces wood from a snooker table a farmhouse table and anything else i have got left that's lying about !! Ingredients =PIC 1 .......PIC 2 & 3 its slowly getting there !! I have no timer/mechanism , so its going to have a drop bar with a manual operation and a salter timer !!!!

Alan there is a nice skeggy upside down bath type table on fleabay at the moment, now that would be a challenge to turn that into something desirable B It had one of those 2 years ago !! Best thing to do with it is : re-use the slate , the mushrooms , the drop rings and possibly the timer mechanism ..........the rest ' bin it ' I have 2 tables ready to go and 1 that will be ready in 5/6 days..........and 2 still to refurb !! Its not worth advertising them at the moment ( But they will be nowhere near ISAACS prices ) The 3 are :- 1 re built E.J.Riley 2 Complete ' Turner ' biuld 3 1981 SAMS If any one is thinking of investing !!!!
