First game played on the table between players of differing styles, what do you think? I think the rings are pretty close to what we have. My only suspicion is that not many balls lip out as if the holes may be grabbing the balls a little to much. Take a skim through the phases of the game and comments, good or bad, are welcome. However if we change the profile then we are not sure what effect that will have and have to reassess. Rings are brilliant and work really well , if they need polishing inside which is questionable , Spun in a lathe with a little T-cut on a cloth would suffice . The main question is availability and cost , by my thinking it would not be economic for individuals to set up for one set , but someone with the right equipment and materials making them at one location would be cost effective .
Alan...........Excellent project and effort Sav , well done ,

Initial impressions are very good, tinged with a hint of caution. The holes on this slate had rough inner surfaces so I have gently eased then with a 60mm flap wheel, hopefully made very little difference to the diameter but will have eased off any high spots. Rings went in very well, if anything marginally looser than I would have liked but only very marginal they were still a tight fit. No problems tapping them in with the hardwood block, or final positioning with the screwdriver handle afterwards, rings survived fine. Balls drop more or less the same as a normal ring so the slightly rougher surface seems to make no difference. The slate will be going in my home table nest week for serious testing. I'll take some video of play. Thus far (largish picture for now, will condense it after a while [edit] hundred hole was tighter so guess size is right
They look Brilliant .............can you bring one to Sudbury ??

Hello Alan You are down Alan. I just haven't updated Dave on the subject. i threw the landlord of a pub and some players down on paper because if you recall we thought the 12 places would be gone in minutes when the entry forms came out. yes, I can be said to have been like Ze Germans by Ze pool! I resemble that remark! So I can tell Dave now (as I did in a phone chat last night) 3. Cambridge - Matt Barnett, Ben Dobson, and then Alan Mee, Alison Prewett-Stansfield Dave is amenable to last minute changes. I am not sure about the first two Dave as i can't get a straight answer but we will fulfil our place at the 4x4. cheers Taffy Brilliant , Thanks for that confirmation

0***2 was bidding on the isle of wight table that just went for £511.00 , SAMS with timer and good slate , he dropped out at £472 , so bidding on that table with ferry charges and traveling costs its got to be a southern buyer ??? I don't suppose you still have the link to that one, Alan ? Would like to see if there's a clue to link it to one of the I.O.W venues shown on our tables map.
Cheers, tommo

Nearly all the tables on ebay are presently being bought by someone with the codename 0***2. If the tables all end up being used in the Uk in houses or pubs - that's fine but does anyone know who it is and what he is doing with the tables? Taffy 0***2 was bidding on the isle of wight table that just went for £511.00 , SAMS with timer and good slate , he dropped out at £472 , so bidding on that table with ferry charges and traveling costs its got to be a southern buyer ???

The seller of the nice Jelks copy "B" table has been visited by o***2, sounds a nasty piece of work. I'm trying to find out whom it is, having warned the seller. Johnson sports , Angelsey .....................they have a table top at £500 ....Maybe they are buying tables.................similar amount of Ebay transactions !!

WOW !!! Ouch !!!
How many other bikes were damaged ?? That sounds like a big ' CASH ' pay out if there is more than just your bike to pay for .
May be better to insist on going through the insurance ?
Good luck with that one .
I once had a car ram into the back of my ISUZU pick up , she insisted there was not a lot of damage and offered to pay me £50.00 cash there and then to forget it , turned out it was her sisters car when i involved the police .
The owners insurance payed for the repairs .....................£2640.00 !!!!!
So again i say good luck Sav with that one
Will you be at the 4 x 4 ?

Early days yet Alan, we have to see if they survive being tapped into the holes and how well they wear in use. Profile can be adjusted based on how the balls drop, we could even keep Taff happy with easydrops if the idea works! Keep Taffy Happy...................................ermmmmmmmmmmm ......would probably want them in a variety of colours and fully adjustable with little hydaulic arms to pull the balls down faster then hurls them back to the ball tray at lightening speed What do think Taffy ?

Jon Bamsey and I have been investigating 3D printing the rings with the object of producing a CAD file for general use. Today, thanks to Jon, the mark III versions arrived, the first set produced. I asked for a different colour so that they will be obvious when they go in my pub table shortly. (big attachment that I will trim down after people have had a chance to look. I think these are pretty close, watch this space. They are the correct outside diameter (hopefully) so will not need rubbing down. Brilliant , absolutely brilliant Sav and Jon , is there a costing or is it to early to say ?? Alan

All the clocks were screwed down to 17 mins or less this year, so difficult to compare like for like. Table 4 had a short clock in my group games, we consistently finished earlier than the nearby tables, but it was a tricky top, fast and quite uphill at the far end so balls were flying back to difficult positions. The table to the central pillar (table 2??) was the most difficult set up with the worst dished slate I have come across, yet, if it was 2, it scored highly. It was heavily downhill at the front and uphill at the back, fortunately it was not quick so the balls deviated less at speed. Correct , the table by the central plilar was Table No. 2

Almost all the French tables (Billard Russe) are eight holes, exact narrow Sams config without the 200 hole, so basically just like you were trying to play on Saturday. Yes there are a few other configs but they are very rare. italian Table

seriously Dave I would never play from anything but the middle! it was on the centreline not sure about middle if we talk back to front. just played... curt, your only conclusion has to be....he can't count the daft bugger! if in s=doubt, swap was my rule. sends you stir crazy doing the one shot. yes a pink but only because a Sams table is so slow returning the ball. I got a Jelks next to it a month later and would suggest banning pinks straight away as being 'totally unnecassary'. fact is, I can only wait so long before I create my own rules at anything!!!!!! pink ball; only allowed to be used as a red while the red is going down or as a last resort; the 9th ball (absolutely nothing else left). as the 9th ball (so the red is on the table already right) it is played as another white. because the pink has now been both a red and a white and the fact that the pink may stay up while the original red went went down; the rule is that a pink is only a red for that/thee shot off the D. that way, afterwards you don't look at the pink and say; "oh what is that worth?". it is a red for but a fleeting moment. it actually works but it has more to do with the table than the rules in themselves. the moment you have a Jelks table you just think; WTF? the pockets/rings traditionally 50mm these are 52mm but with squared edges. this stops rimming. it is also either a hit or a miss - either in or out. the Jelks black rings suck it down compared to these rings. if i did it again they would be 53mm to match the Jelks browns but as 52s they are about the same as the 'bright reds/saffrons' that most know of. and don't mention the mushtittles with impregnated tungsten darts weights. Weebles Wobble but they dont fall down !!!7mm? it's easier for you to judge on these tables as it is a sharp corner to the pocket/ring. it should only have about 3mm of cloth showing. if it was any further away it is a lack of checking on the players part! cheers Taffy

Have contacted , Hilary and i am going to send a memory stick to Buffalo with loads of photos on it and some sketches . But it aint that easy to build a table from scratch , there are lots of things you need which are not readily available on a 1 off basis . Good luck to them if they are willing to have a go . Hello everyone! I joined this group since I recently made a trip to the UK and was introduced to bar billiards. Wow - what a game! I have joined to see if anyone has any blueprints for a DIY table. I am an amateur woodworker and would love nothing more than to build my own table and introduce this wonderful game in the U.S. I have found one link online; however, the measurements do not appear to be complete and are a bit confusing. After an exhaustive google search, the link below is the only one I've seen. www.billiardsforum.com/file/view?f=%2Ffile%2Fbilliard-room%2Fbar-billiards-table-plans.pdfDoes anyone in this group have any blueprints they would be willing to share? Thank you all in advance and thank you for letting me into the group :) -Hilary Hi , i dont think that drawing is the way to go , i think the width is a narrow table and the hole centres dont appear to be correct . And yes i agree it is a very confusing drawing. I do not have full blue print drawings but i have many photos of tables i have refurbished and built , i have some ' drawings ' and sketches . Contact me on alanalanx@aol.com , i may be able to help you further . Alan

Sams 4-pin with skittles. I love their enthusiasm! the stuffy old English hey!!!! Taffy Have you noticed how far the skittles are from the edge of the hole !! Spinning / rimming balls miss them easily.

Its part in the Bar Billiard story Early Sams Table an early Sams Table Whilst trying to research the history of Bar Billiards and its origins three U.K. business names come to the fore. Bar Billiards Ltd, Jelks and Sams Bros. These three business are the names originally associated with the introduction of the game of Bar Billiards into the U.K. Both Jelks and Bar billiards Ltd. have been covered in other articles but Sams story has not. Sams _Atlas _Factory _R Sams-Atlas factory at Hoddesdon - 1980 Interestingly both Sams Bros. & Bar Billiards Ltd. claim to have been the first to introduce Bar Billiards to the U.K., with similar stories of seeing the tables in Northern Europe. Sams didn't call their tables Bar Billiards until (perhaps) the name became associated to the the game. There was always an argument between Sams & Bar Billiards as to who introduced the game to the U.K.!! Other companies used other names such as Snookerette and Russian Billiards. Pictures in the Sams Bros 1935 catalogue show that they offered a range of tables that we would recognise as Bar Billiard tables. SAMs Bros catalogue 1935 1935 Sams Bros catalogue Bar Billiards sams Bros During the research into the game Peter Clare was introduced to Denis Brisley, who had joined Sams Bros.in 1967 as Sales Manager later becoming its Managing Director . After leaving Grays in 1983 Dennis stayed in the industry first with Playday then with Sussex Bar Billiards before finished his career at Bar Billiards Ltd. in 2005. So Dennis was able to provide some interesting information about bar billiards and especially some history of Sams Bros. which had been published in a U.K. Sports Magazine in May 1980.A period when small snooker tables sales were booming. The basics of that article follows with additional information that Dennis has passed on. Ron Sams & Dennis Briesley The original Sams Bros Ltd. was founded by two brothers in 1919. The trade name SAMBROS was registered in 1948. By 1980 Sams was part of the Grays empire and was run by Dennis Briesley, Managing Director, and Ron Sams, son of one of the original founders and consultant to the business. Initially the company manufactured just tennis, badminton and squash raquets and only started to make billiard/snooker tables , the product they are so well know for, later in the company's history. Ron Sams also ran J. B. Halley & Co. Ltd. that specialised in Golf equipment. Grays took over Sams Brothers in 1969. At that time Sams had themselves been negotiating to take over a company - Atlas Ltd., a company which specialised in minature billiard/snooker tables. A year after Grays had bought Sams they took over Atlas and amalgamated the two companies to form Sams-Atlas Ltd. During its history Sams has produced a wide range of product lines associated with sport and leisure. Other ventures the company has been involved with, before being taken over, were bar billiard table manufacturing plant in Jamaica. Dennis was able to tell us that the factory in Jamaica was set up in the late 1950's and assembled over 2000 bar billiard tables and over 1000 bar billiard tables were exported from their U.K. Factory.
Apart from their main product line of miniature billiard/snooker tables Sams-Atlas also make miniature pool tables and bar billiards tables, the latter mostly for pubs and clubs. They also operate a renovation service for bar billiard tables and often get tables back that they made more than 30 years ago. Dennis was also able to advise that Sams ran a operating division supplying bar billiard tables to sites on a shared basis. These tables were the 'league' tables and were the wider models. Also in the article it mention that up to the late 1970s Sams -Atlas made all their own Billiard/Snooker balls. This side of the business had been part of Atlas but accoriding to the article it was the cost of the raw material, which was in rod form, andso resulted in a large amount of wastage that resulted in this part of the manufacturing business coming to an end.

Thanks to all for this, especially chris cass at the helm. Congratulations to Worthing, 3-3 must be their speciality! And dave I'm sure that I speak for everyone when i say thanks for collecting for such a worthy cause! Newmarket had a great day out and Alfie and Ally excelled for us. Ally didn't lose a singles and Alfie only lost his singles to The Colminator so he and she were our star players. We came third if y'all didn't know so an improvement on the wooden spoon of last year! Tables were a lot more consistant this year too. well done all round! cheers Taffy I wiil second everthing that Taffy says above it was an excellent day and went very smoothly , even the the weather was good. Hopefully i will get down there again sometime , thanks to everyone for the extremely friendly welcome Alan

So Mr taffy what did you leave at the pub last night that will require a return visit tonight? It was good to see you again last night and watch you coaching a new player. With your scores consistently approaching the 3K mark I would think that you much be one of the favourites for Saturday. No problem with Taffys play but i'm in his team so i will easily drag them down . The other good news is i will have plenty of change . See you Saturday ( I will be in Sudbury Friday night , staying at the Angel , i have never been to Sudbury before so i have no idea about the place ? ) Alan
